Chase now offering 5,000 point referral bonuses on the Freedom and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Update: This offer is expired. You can find the current offer details here.

Up until last year American Express had a referral program whereby if you had one of their cards you could earn a referral bonus (usually about 5,000 points) for referring someone else to the card. For whatever reason they ended that program, though it looks like Chase is now getting in that game through January 31, 2014.

If you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card you can now refer another person to the card, and if they get approved you get 5,000 points, up to a maximum of 50,000 points.

Meanwhile if you have a Chase Freedom Card you can now refer another person to the card, and if they get approved you get 5,000 points, up to a maximum of 50,000 points as well.

Best I can tell, as of now no other cards are offering a similar bonus.

Certainly a nice offering for anyone that has the card and wants to refer a friend or family member.

  1. Gawwww – I sure do wish that this was retro-active (I’ve referred two ppl this year to Sapphire). I’m going to see if I can sweet-talk Chase into the credit.

  2. Can someone with CSP mastercard (not the currently available visa) may a referral to someone else? If so, will the other person get the mastercard or visa version?

  3. Hi Ben,
I did not find this info on e Chase site. – do those that sign up get the annual fee waived for first year as well as the 40k miles?
    Cheer Levy.

  4. @ Levy Flight — To the best of my knowledge it’s the same sign-up bonus with the first year annual fee waived.

  5. I was told American Express discontinued it to make some updates. Sounds like it may be coming back. This was last month.

  6. Be warned: if you recently got a Chase Sapphire Preferred (as I have), then the promotion won’t work for a few days until after you first use the card and their system locks in your information. I was advised to try in a few more days, having just used the card yesterday for the first time. Pretty dumb that their technology can’t process this immediately.

  7. I have a Chase Freedom Visa card, and when I go to enter in my info I get this screen:
“You have reached a page that does not exist . Please check that your offer information is entered correctly and try again. Thank you.”

    Any ideas?

  8. I got Chase Sapphire Preferred Visa, but no luck here 🙁 Message: “This Promotion is currently being tested and only eligible customers will be able to get through the authentication screen to refer a friend. Make sure you entered your information exactly as it appears on your account. If you feel you’ve received this message in error please call the number on the back of your card for assistance.”
