American is offering a 5,000 mile discount on roundtrip awards to Hawaii for travel this fall. The promotion is valid for bookings made through September 13, 2013, for travel between September 11 and December 17, 2013. These dates fall over American’s traditional “off peak” award period, so while they ordinarily charge 17,500 miles for a one-way off peak ticket between the mainland and Hawaii, during this promotion they’re charging just 15,000 miles each way. The one catch is that you have to be flying American to take advantage of this offer, and not one of their partner carriers like Alaska or Hawaiian.
Keep in mind that you can combine this with the 10% mileage refund offered for having a Citi AAdvantage Visa card, which can save you an extra 3,000 miles on a roundtrip.
If you’re originating on the west coast you’re still better off redeeming British Airways Avios, as they charge just 12,500 Avios one-way for coach travel between the west coast and Hawaii nonstop. But if you’re originating anywhere else, this is a rather good deal unless fares are low.
