“Official” 50,000 mile sign-up bonus on Citi AAdvantage MasterCard

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. Please check out our advertiser policy for further details about the partners we work with. Thanks for your support!

Citi has long had “ghost” links to their credit cards, whereby applications would yield higher sign-up bonuses than the otherwise best publicly available offer. That’s mainly because they were intended to be targeted sign-up bonuses, but the links worked for everyone.

For example, there’s this link to the Citi AAdvantage Visa Card, which offers 50,000 AAdvantage miles after spending $3,000 within three months, and the annual fee is waived. As you’ll see, though, the bonus isn’t actually stated anywhere, but rather people still consistently earn that bonus when applying through that link. But some people don’t feel comfortable doing that, which I can certainly understand.

As an alternative, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® is offering 50,000 AAdvantage miles after spending $3,000 within three months. The annual fee is $95, though that’s waived the first year.

It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen 50,000 mile bonuses on the Citi AA Mastercards, so this is as good as it gets!

If you’d like to learn more about the rules for applying for Citi AAdvantage Cards, this FlyerTalk thread remains the single best resource, especially the wiki at the top.

  1. I signed up for this card a few weeks ago at 40,000 bonus miles 🙁
    Timing is everything in life…

  2. Can you get both, the VISA and this new Mastercard since they are different products. Is there a business AA card?

  3. @ GetToThePoints — Up until recently you could, but in the past week people have started reporting issues, so I’d suggest holding off. There is a business version of the card as well.

  4. If you have had the Visa for like 6 months, can you get the Mastercard and get that bonus since it is a different product? Thanks.

  5. I already have the Gold version of this card, but I have had it for well over a year. Would I be qualified to receive the 50,000 points if I were to also sign up a a Platinum card now?

  6. @ Dave Z — Yes, Gold version is totally different I believe, so you should have no issues being approved for this.

  7. @ Mike B — Based on some reports in the past week it appears as if you may not be eligible, so I’d suggest holding off till we hear some more data points.

  8. Citi has definitely “lost that churning feeling” Sigh…

The most recent report on F/T is:

“Never had Citi AA visa. Had a Citi AA Amex (opened ~15 months ago, already closed).

Applied today for the Citi AA visa. Denied because I have had an AAdvantage card in the past.”

    🙁

  9. Lucky, is it possible to upgrade the Gold version to Platinum and receive the sign-up bonus? I’ve had the Gold for about 10 years now.

  10. @ Aaron — You should be able to just sign up for it and get the bonus as far as I can tell. No way to “convert” it and get the bonus, though.

  11. Hi Lucky, I applied for this card and wan’t approved for it. The reason was that this offer is only for the first time user(I have another AAdvantage CITI card, which is the VISA card I had from about 6 months ago.) Do you think I can call to ask for reconsideration? Thanks.

  12. @ Alan — Unfortunately based on what has been posted in the above FlyerTalk thread, that does seem to be their new policy… or at least what they’re sticking to at the very moment. Doubt there’s anything the reconsideration line can do there.

  13. Just for the sake of another data point: I have the Citi AA Visa platinum card and both HHonors cards, and I was approved for this MasterCard last night, and I confirmed my eligibility for the bonus via chat. (I’ve had the Visa for about three years.)

  14. If i spend 3000 in one month, will i get the miles after that statement or will they be credited after 3 months? I am looking for a travel in December and could really use the miles.

  15. @ Sky — Typically the miles post once the statement closes where you complete the minimum spend, so in practice they should post after the first month in your example.

  16. Recently received AAvantage card, spend of $3000.00 within 3 months, bonus of 40,000 miles, spend needs to be completed by 9.24.
I now see this bonus, anyone had luck with increasing bonus by calling Citibank? I just tried # on back of card-no go.
    Thanks!
