British Airways improves functionality of online award search tool

British Airways has made one pretty great change to their online award search tool overnight. Previously when searching for award space you’d have to specify the cabin you want to fly and it would only show you award space for that cabin. Now the award search automatically displays availability for all classes of service, for travel on both British Airways and partner airlines. Since the British Airways website is great for searching OneWorld award space, I’d say this is a pretty great improvement for anyone that has AAdvantage miles or any other OneWorld mileage currency.

I’m mildly amused that they tout the other functional improvements they’ve made, including:

Improved RFS (Reward Flight Saver) signposting and new icon to distinguish from standard redemptions.

A ‘change flights’ button on the fare quote page to make it easier for you to change selected flights.

A new ‘back’ button on the fare quote page to allow enable easier navigation between pages

I’ll try to curb my enthusiasm on the last three changes…

  1. what is the best way to find aa space on ba, i have miles from the 100k credit card sign up expiring in feb 2014 and dont want to see them go to waste,

is there a simple way to make rez or extend the time to use

  2. Is it really so hard to ask that they implement a button to change the reward search without completely clearing the information when you “start over”?

  3. Any thoughts as to why Aer Lingus space that shows up on UA.com and QF.com is not showing on BA.com?

  4. In the transition, something else happened. Yesterday, I could find flights from DPS to BOS (via KUA and NRT). The new system now shows no flights, although the segments are available on separate searches. There is availability, but no longer showing up. Presumably this is not the only routing with the same problem.

  5. Ben, the last three changes are big! As Jonathan M says, it was so frustrating having to start all over!!

Maybe they’re one step away from showing partner availability like they do for BA (where you don’t need to click each date individually).

  6. @ Lantean — I should have been more accurate. It only shows three cabins at a time, it seems.

  7. @ mark — Any activity will extend the life of your Avios (including transferring 1,000 Membership Rewards points to BA). If you’re trying to search American award space I’d suggest searching directly on their website for MilesAAver space, and when you find it go to ba.com to book, as the same flights should be available.

  8. @ BD — Aer Lingus (and Alaska) award space doesn’t show up on ba.com, so unfortunately you have to book by phone.

  9. @ Jonathan M – I totally agree, so I am confused by…
@ Jeremy, @ Nick, and @ Jorge, are you saying you see the ability to Start Again without completely reentering your flight information? I am still encountering the same need to “start over” from scratch as we’ve always had with the site.

Anyone else having trouble getting the class of service availability matrix to render properly in Firefox? The information and column headers are all jumbled – I’m sure they’ll fix though.

Overall a great development — if they just add a better calendar function like Qantas’ or American’s, this would be the best OneWorld search tool by far. Even better would be American just adding more of their partners online.

  10. They’ve also made the banner re extra Gold award inventory pretty massive to make sure you appreciate you’re getting it!

  11. It has taken a while but good to see it rolled out. Avios.com has had this functionality for a while now. That said, at times I found that when looking for a particular date, there would be no availability, but searching for a few days out, the original date became available which was a bit cheeky!

  12. I noticed all the flights (over a dozen daily) operated by Dragon Air between HKG and PVG are gone, leaving only 3 Cathay flights showing in the search. How can that be????

  13. Jan 1, 2014. I just looked again, two Dragon Air flights showed up (vs two dozen before), but no economy seats (says cabin not operating?). Surrounding dates are the same! This is not good news to me as I need 5 tickets on this date.
