Priority Club offering a 50% bonus on the purchase of points through June 23, 2013 — not a good deal

Through June 23, 2013, Priority Club is offering a 50% bonus on the purchase of points.

The normal cost to purchase points is as follows:

1,000 – 10,000 points for $13.50 per 1,000 points
11,000 – 25,000 points for $12.50 per 1,000 points
26,000 – 50,000 points for $11.50 per 1,000 points

That means if you’re maxing out the promotion you can purchase 75,000 points for $575, or 0.76 cents per point. In the past this could have been a good deal since Priority Club used to count purchased points towards elite status. 60,000 points earned per year (even if purchased) got you Platinum. That’s not the case anymore.

Given that purchased points no longer count towards status, there’s no reason to take advantage of this promotion since there’s always a backdoor way to purchase Priority Club points for 0.7 cents each.

If you do choose to take advantage of this promotion, points purchases are processed by points.com, so the spend wouldn’t qualify as hotel spend.

  1. I wouldn’t buy. No longer a good deal as you mentioned. Buying points will cost almost the same as booking through a discount site and you will get status points for your stay.

  2. I rarely stay in IHG hotels, so I’m thinking of buying 3k points to get myself past 5k mark so I can use the trick and pull the trigger on any Points Break hotels in the future.

  3. @Matt
I was thinking the same thing. I’m sitting on 3,250 pts and would like to be at that magic 5k threshold. I can’t seem to convince myself if I should do a deal like this or just transfer in 2k from UR though. I REALLY like my UR pts, but not for use a PC/IHG properties.
