While I greatly value both airline miles and hotel points, I find hotel points more valuable for holiday travel. That’s because airlines release very little award space over the holidays, while hotel chains like Starwood have no blackout dates on award redemptions, and let you redeem Starpoints for stays as long as a standard room is available.

Points can even be used for a stay around New Years in cities like London and Sydney, where rates are usually through the roof that time of year. It’s one of my favorite things about hotel points, actually.

For example, take a look at the rates at the Westin Sydney for late next December:

As you can see, you can redeem either 12,000 Starpoints per night or pay 750AUD (~780USD) per night. As if that’s not awesome enough, you even get the fifth night free when redeeming Starpoints for a “free nights” stay.

Or take a look at the Park Lane Hotel, which is 306GPB (~595USD) per night with tax, or 12,000 Starpoints per night:

In anticipation of that, the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express is sponsoring a giveaway for 25,000 Starpoints that you can use towards your holiday hotel stays next year.

  1. It really doesn’t matter where you stay as long as you are on vacation! But for fun – Westin Sydney.

  2. I just signed up for the SPG amex to plan another holiday trip to Germany – I would book Le Meridien Munich!

  3. I would love to redeem them for a stay at the Koh Samui Le Meredien in Thailand this March. Great blog, thank you!

  4. Would definitely use the points at St Regis Bangkok or St Regis Mauritius! I find SPG points are fun to use at st Regis since they are so pricey otherwise.

  5. I would use the points on 3 nights at the St. Regis Mauritius using the cash and points option for 8,000 points and $150 a night. It usually goes for 602 euros a night.

  6. “3. You can Tweet me once per calendar day (let’s define that as 12:00AM EDT till 11:59PM EDT), and the contest will run through 11:59PM EDT on Sunday, December 30.”

One question…if the entirety of this giveaway is during the winter, why are we defining the calendar day based on daylight time?

  7. I just finished 5 nights at sheraton kona on points and thought it was a great value! Ocean front room looking out at the manta rays in the bay

  8. If we’re talking value this time of year then I would redeem at the Sheraton Madison. Can’t put a price on not having a dozen people sleeping at your house for Christmas. 3 rooms, 2 nights at Sheraton Madison 🙂

  9. Thank you for the efforts and info for us. I would like to spend two nights at the Westin in Italy, next April.

  10. I’d stay 3 nights in lovely Vienna for a total of $180 in the swanky Le Meridian, located in the historic city center, across the street from the opera house. (That’s 16,000 points for one night free, plus 4,800 pts and $90 for two extra nights. And yes, if you do the math, that’s 25,600 points, but who doesn’t already have 600 Starpoints?)

  11. Just booked St. Regis NYC for Dec 26-28 using cash and ponts at $275 plus 15000 points. Lowest available rate is $795 so this is a great deal! If I win the points, I will use them for Cash and points at this property!!

  12. Le Meridien Cairo and the Sheraton Luxor resort in Egypt
We have stayed at both – a great value then
I am sure an even better value now, assuming you escape with your life after the trip
Having said that my friends did just that 2 weeks ago and came back very happy
They are now in fact great values on cash as well.

  13. Id redeem for 2 nights at the Sheraton Hong Kong ..not super exciting but that’s where we’re heading next year

  14. Westin Paris Vendome…not the greatest of SPG deal but it is a great value in Paris. Beautiful location…heading there in Feb!
    Thanks Lucky!!

  15. I’d redeem for a night at the W Hong Kong

(by the way, I have no idea how “steve” above will redeem for the “Weston Hong Kong” (I presume he means “Westin”) when one doesn’t exist in the first place!)
