British Airways offering a 25% bonus on hotel transfers through January 13, 2013!

In addition to the 30% bonus they’re offering on transfered Membership Rewards points at the moment, British Airways is also offering a 25% bonus on the transfer of hotel points through January, 13, 2013. Bonus points should post 4-6 weeks after the transfer is complete.

In general I don’t consider Avios to be an especially valuable points currency, though for certain redemptions (like shorthaul coach awards) they can really come in handy, so I’m sure this will interest some.

If you transfered 20,000 Starpoints during this promotion you’d receive a total of 31,250 Avios. That’s because you get a 5,000 point bonus for every 20,000 Starpoints you convert, and then the 25% transfer bonus on top of that.

Marriott has vacation packages whereby you get a set number of points and free nights, and British Airways is one of the partners included in that, so it may be worth checking out that option.

Club Carlson points can most efficiently be transfered to British Airways at a 100,000:18,000 ratio, so through this promotion you’d earn a total of 22,500 Avios for such a transfer.

It’s generally a horrible value to convert Hilton, Hyatt, or Priority Club points into airline miles, so I’d shy away from that.

This isn’t a promotion I’ll personally be taking advantage of, though it is nice to have the option.

  1. Living in Seattle and Hawaii being one of my favorite places to visit, this deal is intriguing with my SPG points.

  2. Remember that for international itineraries, like LAX-SJD or NYC-YUL/YYZ you can book for half as many Avios and purchase the other Avios at a price that works out to 1.33c. So even British Airways doesn’t value them that highly.

  3. Hi Lucky,
I have never flied BA but I will accumulate 150,000 Avios miles through my Chase BA Visa card (with $30K purchase this year). I have an impression from your blog that BA charges hefty fuel or other fees when redeeming reward trips. My question is: what BA routes from US (especially from NY city) does BA charge small amount of fees? For example, how about BA reward flight’s fees from NY City to Paris, London or Berlin and to Shanghai or HK (does BA fly to China)?

  4. @ Andy — British Airways doesn’t impose fuel surcharges for travel on Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, LAN, or for travel on American to destinations other than Asia or Europe. They do impose fuel surcharges for all of their own flights.
