25,000 Delta SkyMiles for a $500 SkyMall purchase

Through September 18, SkyMall is offering 25,000 Delta SkyMiles for a purchase of at least $500 (excluding tax and delivery). So if you’ve been eyeing a garden gnome, an underwater cellular phone system, a canine genealogy kit, or slippers with flashlights on them, this one’s for you.

I value Delta SkyMiles at a minimum of one cent each, probably a bit higher. Then again, it takes 6-8 weeks for the points to post, so I’ll just say I value them at one cent each to be conservative.

So this is essentially $250 off a $500 or more item from SkyMall.

They ran the same promotion last September and I didn’t take advantage of it, and I doubt I will this time either.

Anyway, does anyone see something from SkyMall that’s worthwhile? Maybe something that can be resold at just a slight loss?

  1. At a first sight Samsung Galaxy Tab retails for $349 in Skymall and $330 on eBay. I’m not a pro though to assure both are exactly the same models.

  2. They do have Marriott gift cards. Unfortunately I don’t stay there but for somebody that does might be worth it.

  3. They have an attic access stair insulator and some fire escape ladders that could put you over the $500, and allow you to justify it as a “home improvement” at the same time. I thought I read the T&C indicate Gift Cards are not valid.

  4. The Gigaset phone is one the best out there. Buy it and Skymall will meet the best price. The handsets are the same price as the whole rig with the base so buy three, throw two bases away and get a three handset setup for a great price.

  5. When you sell via ebay, don’t you have to pay ebay some sort of commission…though I do like the “buy a camera and sell it on ebay” option.

  6. @Mark – even accounting for Ebay seller fees, as long as you find the right item that you can resell at a good price it’s a win-win situation. You’re still effectively buying 25K miles for very low cost.

  7. Coffee has not set in yet, so maybe I missed this in the T&C but is this limited to one 25k per person? I didn’t see it anywhere.

  8. I can confirm from the ADMIN of Skymall that they want us to order as many $500 orders as we can BUT DO NOT USE ANY CODES!

    Just got this in email:

“A person can place as many $500 orders as they want to take advantage of this promotion, there are no restrictions. We actually encourage it, if you want to knock out all of your Holiday shopping now then this is the best way to do it.”

So find the right stuff and load up kids!

  9. So…if I buy 10 Galaxy Tab’s plus a battery in 10 separate transactions, sell the suckers on Ebay (seems you can get at least $430, not including fees).. One could easily have 250K DL miles for $1000. Good way to get on Air France A380.

  10. I thought of this last year, but the numbers aren’t good. eBay sellers fees will be about 10% and then sales tax eats another 9%, skymall shipping is $22. If you can get $430, then you lose $195 per sale. And it says the galaxy tab cannot be discounted which usually means no delta miles bonus. The Bose headphones had the same problem last year.
