50% bonus on Membership Rewards transfers to Delta SkyMiles is back through September 30!

Delta SkyMiles is once again offering a 50% mileage bonus on first time transfers from American Express Membership Rewards through September 30, 2011. Furthermore, if you transfer at least 100,000 points, you’ll receive 25,000 Medallion Qualifying Miles, enough for Silver Medallion status (or to possibly bump you up to another elite tier). Registration is required.

These bonuses from American Express seem to be nonstop right now. There’s currently a 50% transfer bonus for British Airways Executive Club through July 31, and just a few days ago a 25-40% bonus was announced for Delta SkyMiles through June 30 (with no limit to the number of times it can be earned).

If you’ve already taken advantage of the 50% transfer bonus during one of the previous promotions, the easy workaround is to create a new SkyMiles account or use the account of someone that hasn’t yet taken advantage of the promotion.

While the terms and conditions always state that it could take a few weeks for the bonus points to post, in practice they have been posting with the standard transferred miles, which is great news. Therefore you don’t have to stockpile miles with no specific use, but can transfer with the full bonus once you have a use for them.

I’m sure I’ve said it a million times before, but I’ll say it again. Normally it doesn’t make sense to transfer miles to Delta SkyMiles, though there are some instances in which this can be an amazing offer, such as:

  • Using points for travel on V Australia, which has excellent award availability to Australia, even in business class, for 150,000 Delta SkyMiles (100,000 Membership Rewards points through this promotion)
  • Using points for travel on Air France or Air Tahiti Nui to Tahiti in business class, which are the only two convenient options between the US to Tahiti, for 150,000 Delta SkyMiles (100,000 Membership Rewards points through this promotion)
  • Finding a business class saver award to Europe, either on Air France or another partner, especially out of hubs like Washington Dulles where there’s excellent award availability, for 100,000 Delta SkyMiles (67,000 Membership Rewards points through this promotion)

(Tip of the hat to Gary)

  1. Any chance CO will offer something similar prior to the end of the partnership with AMX in September? That’s what I am waiting for…

  2. @ JJG @ eds1830 — I wouldn’t hold your breath. In the years they’ve been partners I don’t remember them once offering a transfer bonus, so I don’t expect we’ll see it now either.

As a fact in mid 2000s they infact gave a 50% bonus IIRC. I used that promo then to empty my MR a/c.
