Free British Midland Silver status for new members

British Midland is offering free Silver status to those that join Diamond Club through this link. Even if you have no intention of ever flying British Midland, keep in mind that Silver status with British Midland also comes with Star Alliance Silver status, which gets you two free checked bags whenever flying with a Star Alliance airline, and sometimes even gives you priority boarding. So if nothing else, this is a way to avoid bag fees on Star Alliance for those without status.

Comments

  1. The two free checked bags statement is wrong. Currently UA, US, and CO lets a *A silver member check two bags for free, but lots of airlines in Europe doesn’t, and this is not a *A published benefit. Last I checked SK doesn’t give silvers anything else than what *A requires.

  2. Signed up for this promo last year! They send you a very cool welcome kit in the mail with your card, member benefits, and promotions for (European) car rentals.

  3. I signed up but never did receive the activation email. What do you think is up with that? Checked my spam folder even online and it wasn’t there (thing often get shuffled there since ATT paired with Yahoo). Hit the Resend button three times and it never showed. I may just try to re-register and see what happens.

  4. I filled in all info, then after Submit, it took me to the homepage–No confirmation that it went through, no new Account number generated, no email from them. Is the site not submitting?

  5. Thanks for the tip! I’ll probably make silver this year on US (my secondary airline choice) but it never hurts to be get the Star Alliance status a bit earlier. The link worked fine for me with Firefox.

  6. #10 and #11, I’ve had the same problem. I used my personal e-mail address and even turned off the spam filter, nothing after 3 “resends.”

When I go home I will try my personal laptop that doesn’t have everything sent through my firm’s firewall. I’m no IT expert but we’ll see if it works.

  7. Link worked fine yesterday using IE and am now silver status. Activation email took about 30 minutes to come through.

  8. Tried again today and it worked! After hitting submit after inputting personal info, this time I got taken to the “Look for activation email” page. Score (almost)!
My config: [Mac 10.6.6, Firefox 4.0, cleared cache, cookies, and goodies].

  9. Score as in you got Silver or you got activation email?

I tried two links yesterday and both got me Blue only.

  10. Well, it let me register weeks ago, gave me Silver, then his morning I got this email:

We’re pleased to see that you recently joined our Diamond Club frequent flyer programme. However, I’m writing to you because unfortunately the link you used to join was an exclusive by invitation only offer and as noted in our terms and conditions was non transferable.

Regrettably, we will not be honouring the Silver status, and over the next few days your account will be downgraded to Blue status. Our decision is final, and we won’t be entering into any further correspondence on this. On a positive note though, our frequent flyer programme is one of the most generous programmes around, and you only need to earn 16,000 membership status miles to earn a Silver membership. When you fly with us, or any of the Star Alliance airlines, you’ll reach Silver status in no time at all. You’ll also have access to all our offers and promotions, as well as being the first to hear about our great sale fares. We hope you’ll still enjoy the benefits of your Diamond Club membership.

  11. I just got the following e-mail denying my Silver status. Apparently it was meant for invitation only:

    “Dear Antonio

  12. I also received the same email. If they could verify after people registered that this ‘invite link’ wasn’t for us, why couldn’t they have done that beforehand?

  13. @Brandon,

Probably a couple of reasons. They may not have thought of it. Or maybe the systems aren’t linked and once they saw so many people getting free status they checked and made some changes to verify whether people other than those targeted were signing up.

The bottom line is that it was targeted and if you weren’t one of those targeted you really shouldn’t complain. Sometimes places honor things and sometimes they don’t.

Ideally, as you mentioned, it would be nice that they would validate it as you sign up.
