Starwood’s hotel award category changes for 2011 aren’t half bad…

Every year Starwood revises their hotel categories as far as award stays go. They claim the revision is based on room rates, though at times that doesn’t make sense. Last year, despite a lousy year for hotels, the award categories shifted upwards mostly. Well, Starwood has announced the new hotel categories for this year, and on the whole, the changes are fairly positive. 93 hotels move down in categories, while 84 move up. Of course everyone’s going to have different opinions as to whether it’s a positive change or not, depending on which hotels you like to redeem at. It definitely could have been a lot worse.

Gary, being the Starwood guy he is, has a much in-depth analysis. What did I learn from his post more than anything else? I desperately want to visit the W Retreat Koh Samui.

  1. Last year SPG announced it would maintain 2009 category assignments. Hotels did not change category in March 2010. It seemed like hotels went up since there was no downward movement in a year when average daily rates plummeted globally.

2009 saw more hotels go down than up in category assignment.

2007 and 2008 saw the majority of hotels with category adjustment move up.

  2. The Director of Sales & Marketing at W Retreat Koh Samui is a friend of mine. Let me know when you’re going!
