Ever asked to switch seats with such an offer?

Usually I’ll leave posting the most interesting FlyerTalk threads to The Gate, but this thread in particular just cracked me up.

Check out this “offer” someone made to a FlyerTalk member on a recent flight from Frankfurt to San Francisco on United. On one hand the guy is a total, complete, 100% douche. But at the same time, if you’re going to go for a sleazy sales pitch, damnit, this guy had absolute perfect execution.

Sadly enough, I bet it actually works sometimes.

  1. had this happen to me a few time when i’m sitting in Y+ or a nice exit row seat, but never different classes. I’m amazing how shameless some people could be. I’m sure the “new wife” or “we’re on our honey moon” trick has been done to death. Its seems every other couple that i see on planes (that needed something from me) are newly weds.

  2. It’s even worse when they take your seat, and then ask you to switch.

The guy in the FT post was an idiot. If he was such a man, he would have gone to Y, and switched his C seat with one of the Y pax next to his wife.

  3. Wow.

Now I *have* given someone an upgrade instrument as a thank you for switching seats with me so I could sit next to my wife (when a FAM booted her from her original assignment).

But I was seated in F already, and it was just a gesture of thanks because we were actually on our honeymoon (so I was also in a pretty good mood, I’m not sure it DESERVED the gesture).

  4. I have had my fair share of people sitting in my seat and then asking me to move to their’s (which always irks me, but I usually comply as I am to tired to argue and it’s still a F seat) If you ask me, 9x out of 10, I am more then happy to as long as we are in the same cabin.

Granted, I have actively given up my seat in F on a two cabin plane to accommodate someone more deserving then me, IE. a military individual in fatigues who is sitting in the back of the bus and either on their way home or about to be deployed.

  5. I always trade my seat with some who is asking providing it is the same class. I do seek Service man in Uniform to trade if I am traveling alone.

  6. I would like to see that guy try that line on Singapore. People pay for business class tickets all the time. What a jerk
