Yet another InterContinental Ambassador “enhancement”

A mere 24 hours ago I posted about InterContinental “enhancing” their Ambassador and Royal Ambassador programs to be more consistent, which unfortunately ends up meaning fewer properties going the extra mile for their most loyal guests.

Well, here’s another change I overlooked. One of the great things that remained of the Ambassador program were the buy one get one free weekend night certificates. You could book one weekend night for any room (even the Presidential Suite, if you wanted), and then you’d get the second night free in the same room. There were no restrictions or anything, so it was nice.

Well, look at what they snuck into the terms and conditions now:

 *Your certificate entitles you to complimentary accommodation for the second night when you spend a minimum two-night weekend stay at any InterContinental hotel or resort. Valid for 12 months and not applicable for suites.

So now you can’t use your certificate to book a suite anymore. I’ve typically used these certificates to book club rooms in the past and get upgraded to suites, so this change isn’t too bad for me, but I really don’t understand why they’d do this.

In case they haven’t realized, we’re in a recession and hotels are hurting bad. Something tells me they’re not filling all of their suites with guests that paid full price for them, but rather they’re upgrading people into them. Why alienate your best customers now that are actually willing to pay for suites? Revenue for one night in a suite is better than upgrading someone from a non-suite.

Furthermore, this is going to get messy. The nice thing about these certificates was that they were so simple to use. Now the question arises of what InterContinental considers a suite. Is a junior suite technically a suite? What about a non-named suite?

Seriously, this change makes no sense to me.

  1. The top priority for to me for being RA is the early 8am guarantee check-in,minibar.
    If RA member could choose free movie or high speed internet would be great.

  2. I would think anything considered a suite… “junior suite” or a suite with a unique name, would be a suite, since they are called suites…

    Despite the down economy, I think with the limited suites hotel have, they still run very high occupancy. Having a high end room go empty is much less a concern, taking into account the extra time to clean suites and the wear and tear they experience on a higher end product.
