Some Hilton AMEX Changes….

Update: The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN has exciting new benefits, and a great new limited time offer. Learn more about the current offer here.

Currently the Hilton AMEX accrues at least three points on all purchases, while it accrues five points for purchases at supermarkets, gas stations, restaurants, the post office, Hilton Hotels, etc. Most important to me are the supermarkets, gas stations, Hilton Hotels, and restaurants, since that’s where most of my Hilton credit card spend comes from.

Starting January 1, there will be a few changes in the earning structure:

You will receive three additional Hilton HHonors bonus points (for a total of six Hilton HHonors bonus points) for each U.S. dollar of Eligible Spending at the following categories of merchants, excluding warehouse clubs and superstores: supermarkets; drug stores; stand-alone gas stations; and home telephone, wireless, cable, satellite TV, and Internet service providers. You will receive three additional Hilton HHonors bonus points (for a total of six Hilton HHonors bonus points) for each U.S. dollar of Eligible Spending on the Card at any Hilton Family hotel worldwide (excluding Hilton Grand Vacations timeshare purchases and package sales).

So for me this means six points at gas stations and supermarkets, while only three points for restaurants. I guess it’s a trade off, but I’m going to start using an airline credit card again at restaurants.

  1. Hmmm, given that I was planning to spend more money in supermarkets and less in restraurants next year, this might not be too bad.

  2. silver springer, I would likely use my AMEX, which gives me one mile per dollar. For my personal travel patterns, five HH points per dollar is a no-brainer, but since I already have 200,000+ HH points, I would rather earn AMEX points if I’m only earning three HH points per dollar, and transfer those to AC or NH.

  3. Lucky,
Could this change have been targeted? I’ve had the Hilton Amex for 5 years, and have had no notice — mail or email — of a change in bonus categories. Even just got a new-expire-date card just a week ago, and the accompanying material referenced the old categories. And on my Hilton account management page online, it still also lists the old categories with 5 points.

  4. Ken, I believe most have reported receiving a notice with their January statement, so I would expect it then. It seems to me like this applies to everyone.
